    I-Joist Span Tables Explained: TJI, BCI, PWI Compared

    I-joist span tables are straightforward once you know what you're looking at. The problem is when you need to compare across four different manufacturers, each with their own naming conventions and table formats.

    How Span Tables Work

    Every I-joist manufacturer publishes span tables organized by depth, series (stiffness class), spacing (12", 16", 19.2", 24" OC), and load condition (live load, dead load, total load). The table tells you the maximum allowable span for a given combination.

    The key variables:

    • Depth: 9-1/2", 11-7/8", 14", 16" are the standard sizes. Deeper = longer span and less bounce.
    • Series: Each manufacturer has a "standard" and "premium" series. The premium has a stiffer flange (higher E value) and carries more load per depth.
    • Spacing: 16" OC is the residential default. 12" OC for heavy loads or long spans. 19.2" and 24" for engineered layouts.

    Brand Comparison: What's Actually Different?

    The honest answer: not much at equivalent depths and series. A TJI 210 and a BCI 6000 are designed to the same ASTM standards and perform similarly. The real differences are:

    • Regional availability: Some brands dominate certain markets. In the Pacific Northwest, Weyerhaeuser (TJI) and Boise Cascade (BCI) are the primary options. In the Southeast, LP (LPI) has stronger distribution.
    • Dealer pricing: Your local dealer's cost structure matters more than the MSRP difference between brands.
    • Software support: Each manufacturer has their own design software. If your framing contractor is locked into one system, that can influence the spec.
    • Warranty terms: All major manufacturers offer limited lifetime warranties, but the fine print varies.

    Common Mistakes

    1. Ignoring L/480 deflection. Code requires L/360 for live load, but L/480 is the practical standard for reducing floor bounce. If your span table only shows L/360, your floors may feel soft.

    2. Not checking bearing length. I-joists require minimum 1-3/4" bearing at supports. Flush-framed conditions with joist hangers have different requirements.

    3. Forgetting web stiffeners. At concentrated loads and bearing points, most I-joists need web stiffeners. The span table assumes you've installed them.

    The best I-joist is the one your local dealer stocks, your framing crew knows how to install, and your engineer can size without calling tech support.
