    Wood-first.
    Always.

The comparisons and checks I always wanted within reach as a designer. Free, open, no account.

    Built for the field.

The free tools are the comparisons and checks I wanted on one screen while sizing members, quoting material, and answering builders. No login required. Use them. If you need to save the work, build a material list, or carry the answer into a project file, that is what Bardowl Pro is for.

Compare I-joist products across all manufacturers. Span tables, cross-compare, and head-to-head.

How to choose the right product

Glulam vs LVL: When to use each

Glulam excels in long spans and exposed applications, it's architectural-grade and available in custom lengths. LVL wins on consistency and economy for concealed headers, beams, and rim board. Use Glulam when appearance matters; use LVL when it's hidden in the framing.

    I-Joist brands: What's actually different?

TJI, BCI, PWI, and BLI all perform similarly at identical depths and series, the real differences are regional availability, dealer pricing, and warranty terms. Our comparison tool lets you see the data side-by-side instead of flipping through five different catalogs.

PSL vs Timber posts: Load capacity showdown

A 5-1/4" x 5-1/4" PSL (Parallam) column can carry significantly more axial load than a same-size DF timber, but at 2-3x the cost. For exposed applications where aesthetics matter, solid timbers win. For concealed point loads, PSL is the workhorse.

When to spec steel instead of wood

Steel beams make sense when spans exceed engineered wood limits (typically 40'+), when depth is constrained, or when point loads are extreme. Our Beam Compare tool shows you exactly where wood stops working and steel starts making sense, so you're not over-specifying.

    Clarity before commitment.

Every engagement starts with understanding your situation. Clear scope, realistic timelines, honest pricing.
